Major: Cellular and Molecular Biology Blanca Castillo Ochart likes music and literature very much. She is a good listener and reader. What relationship is there between the art of combining sounds and tempo or literature with Cellular and Molecular Biology, which is her specialty when she graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree? She is from San Juan, “sanjuanera”, and a Crabber from Santurce, a San Juan “barrio” that was called “Cangrejos” (Crabs) throughout its history. She studied in a Trujillo Alto school, and when she entered Universidad Metropolitana became part of the students in the MIE Project. She is a deep, analytical, and quiet person, and has a genuine interest in helping people. She wants to continue studies in immunology and its association with cancer. |
Her summer research activities
have helped her achieve that goal. She recently made a presentation at the 6th
Annual MIE Conference at the University of Texas at El Paso titled “A New
Synthesis of Benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinolines”. Keep up the good work, Blanca.
Get your doctorate! Puerto Rico needs you in the fight against cancer! |

Major: Environmental Science She is from the capital, “San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico”, an old metropolis with almost five centuries of history. Carem Vega Ríos arrived at UMET from a school in the Santurce area. She was interested in Environmental Sciences. Little by little, she strengthened her initial desire through the multiple experiences she had, especially in field research (during the summer) at the conifer forest of Teakettle, and also through research conducted by the ATABEX Environmental Society for studies of the Puerto Rican karst, the Puerto Rican “mogotes” –a chain of small limestone hills that extends from east to west on the north coast (San Juan to Aguadilla), and from research of archaeological deposits. |
Carem is very interested
in “ecology, zoology, and the environment” and wishes to continue
studies toward a Master’s Degree in Environmental Evaluation, which would
lead to a doctorate. She says, “MIE contributed toward my education when
it offered me financial aid and gave me the orientation needed to focus on my
studies”. Continue your good work, Carem! Puerto Rico needs people like
you, who help maintain the ecological values. |

Major: Chemistry / Mathematics Although he was born in Río Piedras, one of the oldest towns in Puerto Rico (1714), he was raised in Villa Carolina, lives in Toa Alta, and spends most of his life in Villa Carolina. He had to face school changes at the elementary and high school levels when his family moved. Since 1997, when he entered Universidad Metropolitana, his life, his vision of life and the way he faces it, changed. He has high professional expectations: to complete a doctorate and to conduct research in the business world or in industry. His major is in Chemistry and his minor is in Mathematics. |
He is very interested
in Organic Chemistry and in Environmental Chemistry, and there is evidence of
that in the research that he has conducted at the Harter Branch Oceanographic
Institution in Ft. Pierce, FLA; in his research at the University of Minnesota
in St. Paul, Minneapolis; and in his work at Universidad Metropolitana, Puerto
Rico. He likes sports: playing basketball, running, bicycling, scuba diving, and
dancing. He has a keen interest in helping others, and that is why he visits orphans
and the elderly. “If it were not for the MIE Project–he concludes–I
would have never been able to accomplish everything that I have accomplished”.
Keep up the good work; you will be able to achieve what you want with your effort
and with God’s help, Edil! |

Major: General Natural Science Frances was born with an artistic vein and with a desire to serve others. “I have a doctorate in tutoring in mathematics” as a teaching assistant–she would say jokingly. She was coordinator of the MIE Project Summer Bridge experience, worked with the MIE Project Saturday Academy with high school students, and has been assistant to the MIE accountant. She is from Río Piedras, an old city on the island that today is part of San Juan. She arrived at UMET from the Free School of Music, where she cultivated her voice and played guitar. Once she graduates from General Natural Sciences, her practical experience directs her to continue toward a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. |
“The MIE Project,
with its financial support, has allowed me to continue my studies. UMET is a very
good institution, and if it offered me the degree that I need to complete, I would
continue studying here”. According to her, the financial aspect transcends
all other aspects in her education: “my personal life has been enriched
more than what I would have thought...” Frances, you are honorable, a perfectionist,
cheerful. Continue singing, because we need it; that is, Puerto Rico needs your
smile, your service, and your guitar as a messenger... |

Major: Environmental Science Javier Bobonis is from Guaynabo, a town with very old traditions. He enrolled at UMET after having studied his elementary and secondary school in the area. Upon graduation, he was not totally clear as to what his specialty would be, although he knew he was attracted to areas related to ecology. But, as the poet says, “you construct your own road as you walk”. Today, Javier graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science. His summer research experiences in California have been fundamental to achieve this success. He investigated at the Teakettle Experimental Forest in Sierra Nevada; in Río Piedras in the “Rapid Environmental Assessment”; and in the Urban Marine Reserve, in Isla Verde, Carolina, Puerto Rico. |
He wishes to continue
graduate studies in Environmental Science in the management of resources and on
environmental evaluation to collaborate in the protection of our environment.
“MIE has given me the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research in my
field of specialty in Puerto Rico and in the United States”. Continue walking
through the forest and riding Atlantic waves on your surfboard, Javier! Continue
helping to protect nature in your beautiful Island! |
